USES:
This compound is used in organic synthesis to produce dye intermediates.
It is also used as an intermediate to produce a variety of derivatives such
as benzoyl peroxide, as a herbicide, as a perfume fixative, as a polymeriza-
tion catalyst, as a benzolating agent, in the synthesis of aliphatic acid
chlorides, in organic analysis for making benzoyl derivatives for identifi-
cation purposes and for acylation (i.e., the introduction of the benzoyl
group into alcohols, phenols and amines (Schotten-Baumann reaction)).

ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS:
This compound is harmful if swallowed or inhaled [058]. It is a
corrosive [058,269,275,451]. It is a powerful irritant of the skin, eyes,
mucous membranes and respiratory tract [031,036,346,451]. It is also a
lacrimator [031,036,051,275]. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic
and corrosive fumes of hydrogen chloride gas, phosgene, carbon monoxide
and carbon dioxide [043,058,269,451].
MINIMUM PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
If Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing is not worn during
handling of this chemical, wear disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to
your gloves.

RECOMMENDED RESPIRATOR:
When working with this chemical, wear a NIOSH-approved full face
positive pressure supplied-air respirator or a self-contained breathing
apparatus (SCBA). If either of these are not available, wear a full face
chemical cartidge respirator equipped with the appropriate organic vapor
and high efficiency particulate filter cartridges. However, note that full
face chemical cartridge respirators provide a substantially lower protection
level than do positive pressure supplied-air or SCBA equipment.

You should keep this material in a tightly closed container
under an inert atmosphere, and store it at refrigerated temperatures.
SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
If you spill this chemical, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then use
absorbent paper to pick up liquid spill material. Your contaminated clothing
and absorbent paper should be sealed in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual
disposal. Solvent wash all contaminated surfaces with toluene followed by
washing with a soap and water solution. Do no reenter the contaminated
area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that
the area has been properly cleaned.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms
(such as redness or irritation) develop.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after
washing the affected areas.
INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in
the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to
transport the victim to a hospital.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.
EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Corrosive chemicals will destroy the membranes
of the mouth, throat, and esophagus and, in addition, have a high risk of
being aspirated into the victim's lungs during vomiting which increases the
medical problems.
If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of
water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control
center. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Transport the victim
IMMEDIATELY to a hospital.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of exposure to this compound include strong irritation of the
skin, eyes and mucous membranes [031,062,301,346]. It also causes irritation
of the nose and throat [371]. It can cause corrosion and lacrimation [051,
053,269,275]. Burns of the skin and eyes may occur on contact [036,058,269,
371]. Exposure may result in lung irritation, liver and kidney damage and
central nervous system effects [301]. It may also result in unspecified
effects on the olfaction and respiratory systems [043]. It may cause lung
edema and in severe cases, death [346]. Injury to the eyes has been reported
[371]. Inhalation may result in coughing, sneezing, choking and difficulty
in breathing. Ingestion may cause abdominal pain and vomiting. Inflammation
may occur as a result of skin contact. Eye contact may cause inflammation,
pain and blurred vision [058]. Effects may be delayed [269].
