USES:
This compound is an insecticide used for control of the cotton boll
weevil, termites, ants, grasshoppers, cutworms, maggots, thrips, wireworms,
flies, mosquitoes, soil insects, household insects and field insects. It
has some fumigant action, and is applied as a soil treatment, a seed treatment
or directly to foliage.
COMMENTS:
The EPA has cancelled registration of pesticides containing this compound
with the exception of its use through subsurface ground insertion for termite
control and dipping of roots or tops of nonfood plants [051,072,421].
HANDLING PROCEDURES
ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS:
This compound is toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption [033,
062]. It is readily absorbed by the skin as well as by the lungs and gastro-
intestinal tract [173,430]. When heated to decomposition it emits smoke, acrid
fumes and toxic fumes of carbon monoxide [051]. Decomposition may also produce
hydrogen chloride gas [058].
MINIMUM PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
If Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing is not worn during
handling of this chemical, wear disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to
your gloves.
RECOMMENDED GLOVE MATERIALS:

This chemical has not been tested for permeation by Radian Corporation;
however, the GlovES+ expert system was used to extrapolate permeation test
information from compounds in the same chemical class. The GlovES+ system uses
permeation data from literature sources; therefore, extra safety margins should
be used with the estimated protection time(s). If this chemical makes direct
contact with your glove, or if a tear, puncture or hole develops, replace them
at once.

RECOMMENDED RESPIRATOR:
Where the neat test chemical is weighed and diluted, wear a NIOSH-
approved half face respirator equipped with a combination filter cartridge,
i.e. organic vapor/acid gas/HEPA (specific for organic vapors, HCl, acid
gas, SO2 and a high efficiency particulate filter).

Since this chemical is a known or suspected carcinogen you should contact
a physician for advice regarding the possible long term health effects and
potential recommendation for medical monitoring. Recommendations from the
physician will depend upon the specific compound, its chemical, physical and
toxicity properties, the exposure level, length of exposure, and the route
of exposure.
STORAGE PRECAUTIONS:
You should store this material under ambient temperatures, and keep it
away from oxidizing materials.
SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
Should a spill occur while you are handling this chemical, FIRST REMOVE
ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with
60-70% ethanol and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use
absorbent paper dampened with 60-70% ethanol to pick up any remaining material.
Seal the absorbent paper, and any of your clothes, which may be contaminated,
in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contamin-
ated surfaces with 60-70% ethanol followed by washing with a soap and water
solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or
other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.
DISPOSAL AND WASTE TREATMENT: Not available
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms
(such as redness or irritation) develop.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after
washing the affected areas.
INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital even if no symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath,
or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.
EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
INGESTION:
If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of
water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control
center.
Generally, the induction of vomiting is NOT recommended outside of a
physician's care due to the risk of aspirating the chemical into the victim's
lungs. However, if the victim is conscious and not convulsing and if medical
help is not readily available, consider the risk of inducing vomiting because
of the high toxicity of the chemical ingested. Ipecac syrup or salt water may
be used in such an emergency. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport
the victim to a hospital.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of exposure to this compound may include irritation of the skin,
central nervous system stimulation, ataxia, renal damage, tremors, convulsions,
respiratory collapse, kidney damage and death [051,072]. It can also cause
congestion, edema, scattered petechial hemorrhages in the lungs, kidneys and
brain, hyperexcitability, central nervous system depression and anuria [301].
Other symptoms may include paresthesia, excitement, giddiness, fatigue and
coma [295]. If ingested, it can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and irrita-
tion of the gastrointestinal tract [051,072]. It may also cause liver necro-
sis and blood dyscrasias [033].
