REACTIVITY:
This compound is incompatible with many acyl, aryl and non-metal halides,
methyl bromide, NIO4, oxalyl chloride, phosphorous trioxide, phosphorous
trichloride, phosphoryl chloride, silver fluoride, silver difluoride, sodium
hydride, sulfur dichloride, disulfur dichloride, sulfuryl chloride,
tetrachlorosilane, thionyl chloride, boron compounds, 4(4'-bromobenzoyl)-
acetanilide, carbonyl diisothiocyanate, dinitrogen tetroxide, hexachlorocyclo-
triphosphazine, copper trichloroacetic acid, metal alkoxides, trifluroacetic
acid anhydride, magnesium perchlorate, metal oxosalts, perchloric acid,
periodic acid, sulfur trioxide and metal salts of oxoacids [043]. It reacts
violently or explosively with acetyl chloride, benzenesulphonyl chloride,
cyanuric chloride, phosphorous oxychloride, silicon tetrachloride, SCl2, sulfur
chloride, nitrous oxide, iodine pentafluoride, magnesium perchlorate, HIO4 or
sodium hydrate. Violent reactions or ignition occurs with potassium powder,
potassium t-butoxide, sodium isopropoxide or trifluoroacetic anhydride. This
compound is incompatible with bromomethane, metal nitrates and perchlorates
[036]. It is incompatible with alkali metals and oxidizing materials [058].
It is also incompatible with acid chlorides, phosphorus halides, strong acids,
strong reducing agents and diborane [269].

This compound is hygroscopic [031,043]. Solutions of this chemical in

USES:
This compound is used in antifreeze, hydraulic fluid, paint and varnish
removers and potentially as a pharmaceutical solvent. It is also used as a
clearing solution for examination of microscopic fungus, as a solvent, as a
treatment for interstitial cystitis, as an analytical reagent, in the
manufacture of synthetic fibers, industrial cleaners and pesticides, in the
preservation of cells at low temperatures and in the diffusion of drugs into
the bloodstream by topical applications. In medicine this compound is used as
an anti-inflammatory agent. It is also used in veterinary medicine. It is
used in plant pathology and nutrition, as a metal-complexing agent and as an
analgesic.

ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS:
This compound is a skin and eye irritant [043,269]. It freely penetrates
the skin and may carry dissolved chemicals with it into the body [043]. It may
be harmful by inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption [269]. When heated to
decomposition this compound may emit poisonous gases and toxic fumes of sulfur
oxides, sulfur dioxides, formaldehyde, methyl mercaptan, carbon monoxide and
carbon dioxide [043,058,269].

SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
If you should spill this chemical, use absorbent paper to pick up
all liquid spill material. Seal the absorbent paper, as well as any
of your clothing which may be contaminated, in a vapor-tight plastic
bag for eventual disposal. Wash any surfaces you may have contaminated
with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated
area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified
that the area has been properly cleaned.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES





SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a
physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment.

INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in
the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to
transport the victim to a hospital.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.

EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing,
give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a
hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital if advised by a physician.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport
the victim to a hospital.

SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of exposure to this compound may include rapid breathing,
restlessness, disturbances of color vision, photophobia, headache, diarrhea,
dermatitis, wheal and flare formation, anesthesia, renal and hepatic damage,
gastric distress, drowsiness, vertigo, dyspnea, tenderness in the lumbar and
abdomen and death [151]. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting,
jaundice, anaphylactic reaction and corneal opacity [043]. A garlic-like taste
in the mouth and transient chemical cystitis may also occur [158]. Exposure to
this compound may lead to irritation, redness, itching and scaling of the skin,
chills and cramps [036,051]. It may also cause urticaria, allergic reactions
and lethargy [051]. This compound may cause narcotic effects, convulsions,
visual disturbances and hemolysis [301]. Vasodilation, maceration, chest pains
and hypersensitivity may also occur [295]. Other symptoms may include
irritation and reddening of the eyes, smarting of the skin, sedation and
dizziness [058]. Allergic skin irritation may also occur [900].
