REACTIVITY:
This compound can react vigorously with some oxidizing materials (includ-
ing perchloric acid, fuming nitric acid, sodium peroxide and ozone) [036,058].
It reacts violently with BCl3 [036,043,066]. It combines with acids to form
salts. This compound dissolves alkalies or alkaline earth metals with evolu-
tion of hydrogen [033]. It is incompatible with albumin, solutions of iron,
zinc and aluminum, acids and alkalies [033,051]. This compound couples readily
with phenols and aromatic amines. It is easily acylated and alkylated [395].
It is corrosive to copper and copper alloys [051]. Spontaneously explosive
reactions occur with benzenediazonium-2-carboxylate, dibenzoyl peroxide,
fluorine nitrate, nitrosyl perchlorate, peroxodisulfuric acid and tetranitro-
methane. Violent reactions may occur with peroxyformic acid, diisopropyl per-
oxydicarbonate, fluorine, trichloronitromethane (145 C), acetic anhydride,
chlorosulfonic acid, hexachloromelamine, (HNO3 + N2O4 + H2SO4), (nitrobenzene +
glycerin), oleum, (HCHO + HClO4), perchromates, K2O2, beta-propiolactone,
AgClO4, Na2O2, H2SO4, trichloromelamine, acids, peroxydisulfuric acid, FO3Cl,
diisopropyl peroxy-dicarbonate, n-haloimides and trichloronitromethane.
Ignites on contact with sodium peroxide + water. Forms heat or shock sensitive
explosive mixtures with anilinium chloride (detonates at 240 C/7.6 bar), nitro-
methane, hydrogen peroxide, 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane and peroxomonosulfuric
acid. Reactions with perchloryl fluoride form explosive products [043,066].
STABILITY:
This compound is heat sensitive [102]. It darkens on exposure to air and

SAX TOXICITY EVALUATION:
THR: A human poison by an unspecified route. Poison experimentally by most
routes including inhalation and ingestion. An experimental neoplastigen.
A skin and severe eye irritant, and a mild sensitizer. In the body,
aniline causes formation of methemoglobin, resulting in prolonged anoxemia
and depression of the central nervous system; less acute exposure causes
hemolysis of the red blood cells, followed by stimulation of the bone
marrow. The liver may be affected with resulting jaundice. Long-term
exposure to aniline dye manufacture has been associated with malignant
bladder growths.

USES:
This compound is used in the manufacture of rubber chemicals, agriculture
chemicals and dyestuffs and in the production of MDI group isocyanates used in
polyurethane. It is the parent substance for many dyes and drugs. This
compound is used in rubber accelerators, antioxidants, photographic chemicals,
explosives, petroleum refining, diphenylamine, phenolics, herbicides and
fungicides. It is used in marking inks, tetryl, optical whitening agents,
resins, varnishes, perfumes, shoe polishes and many organic chemicals.
COMMENTS:
This compound is readily biodegradable [051].
HANDLING PROCEDURES
ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS:
This compound is toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin absorption [036,
058,102,346]. Danger of cumulative effects [036]. It is poisonous [033,269].
It is an allergen [062]. This compound is readily absorbed through the skin
[346]. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of carbon monoxide,
carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen [043,269].
MINIMUM PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
If Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing is not worn during
handling of this chemical, wear disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to
your gloves.

STORAGE PRECAUTIONS:
You should protect this chemical from exposure to light. Keep
the container tightly closed under an inert atmosphere, and store
under refrigerated temperatures. STORE AWAY FROM SOURCES OF IGNITION.
SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
If you spill this chemical, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION. Then,
use absorbent paper to pick up all liquid spill material. Seal the absorbent
paper, as well as any of your clothing which may be contaminated, in a vapor-
tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash any surfaces you may have
contaminated with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated
area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that
the area has been properly cleaned.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms
(such as redness or irritation) develop.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after
washing the affected areas.
INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital even if no symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath,
or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.
EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing,
give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a
hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital if advised by a physician.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport
the victim to a hospital.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of exposure to this compound may include headache, drowsiness,
cyanosis, mental confusion, convulsions, nervous system effects, blood effects,
fatigue, loss of appetite and dizziness [036]. Other symptoms may include
irritation of the skin, severe irritation of the eyes, methemoglobin formation,
prolonged anoxemia, central nervous system depression, hemolysis of red blood
cells followed by stimulation of bone marrow, liver effects and jaundice [043].
Nausea, weakness, anemia, incoordination and loss of consciousness may also
occur [058]. Symptoms of exposure to this compound may also include photo-
phobia, impairment of vision, brownish discoloration of the conjunctiva and
cornea, discoloration of the vessels of the retina, disturbances of speech,
tinnitus, faintness, paresthesias, muscle pain and sluggish pupillary action
[099]. Other symptoms may include irritability, dyspnea and death from
asphyxiation [346]. Vomiting, delirium, coma, shock and skin lesions may also
occur [371]. Exposure to this compound may lead to respiratory paralysis
[451]. Other symptoms may include a burning sensation, coughing, wheezing and
laryngitis [269]. Insomnia and paleness may also occur [102]. Cardiac
arrhythmias may result from exposure to this compound [295]. Lethargy and a
drop in blood pressure may also occur [301].
