This compound is used in analgesics, anti-inflammatories, antipyretics,
anticoagulants and antirheumatics. It is also used in food, animal feed,
drug and cosmetic manufacturing. It is used in the treatment of acute and
chronic rheumatic states and for relief of the less severe types of pain such
as headache, neuritis, myalgia and toothache. It is used in veterinary
medicine as an analgesic and an antipyretic.

SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
Should a spill occur while you are handling this chemical, FIRST REMOVE
ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with
60-70% ethanol and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use
absorbent paper dampened with 60-70% ethanol to pick up any remaining material.
Seal the absorbent paper, and any of your clothes, which may be contaminated,
in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contamin-
ated surfaces with 60-70% ethanol followed by washing with a soap and water
solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or
other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a
physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment.
INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in
the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to
transport the victim to a hospital.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.
EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.
INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing,
give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a
hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital if advised by a physician.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport
the victim to a hospital.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of exposure to this compound may include epigastric distress,
retention of salt and water and irritation of the skin and mucosa. At high
levels it causes stimulation and then depression of the central nervous
system, confusion, psychosis, stupor, ringing in the ears, lassitude,
drowsiness and hyperventilation [406]. Contact, inhalation or ingestion can
cause asthma, sneezing, irritation and watering of eyes and nose, as well as
hives, eczema and possibly aplastic anemia [042,051]. Other symptoms may in-
clude burning pain in the mouth, throat or abdomen; hyperpnea, lethargy,
fever, excitability, incoordination, restlessness, ecchymoses, cyanosis,
oliguria, uremia, pulmonary edema, respiratory failure, deep and rapid breath-
ing; apathy, anorexia, double vision, irritability and mania [058,301]. In
addition this compound may cause nausea, vomiting, coma, convulsions, thirst,
dizziness, tinnitus, high-tone deafness, delirium, headache, sweating,
diarrhea, dehydration and hypersensitivity [058,301,406]. It may cause gastro-
intestinal symptoms including stomach pain and heartburn [164]. Ingestion of
large amounts may interfere with normal blood clotting mechanisms. Chronic
effects may include metabolic disturbances and possible kidney damage [058].
Chronic exposure can also lead to abnormal gastric or retinal bleeding,
gastrointestinal ulceration and possible hemorrhage; weight loss, mental
deterioration, skin eruptions, conjunctivitis and liver damage [058,406].
Allergic individuals may exhibit an anaphalactic response to small doses. In
severe poisonings death can occur from respiratory failure and/or cardiovas-
cular collapse [058]. Other symptoms include dyspepsia, hematemesis, melena,
urticaria, angioneurotic edema, rhinitis, paroxysmal bronchospasm, dyspnea,
hypoprothrombinemia, hyperventilation, fever, restlessness, ketosis,
respiratory alkalosis and metabolic acidosis [295]. In children, this compound
may cause drowsiness, metabolic acidosis, hypogylcemia, renal papillary
necrosis, hypouricemia, retardation, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia,
agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, analgesic
nephropathy, leucopenia, epistaxis, sweating, purpura, stomatitis, hypothermia,
allergic reaction, sinusitis, nasal polyps, bronchial asthma, angioneurotic
edema, eosinophilia, hypotension, shock and syncope [295].
