USES:
This compound is used as a curing agent for epoxy resins and urethane
elastomers, as a intermediate in the preparation of polyurethanes and Spandex
fibers, in the determination of tungsten and sulfates and in the preparation
of azo dyes. It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor, cross-linking agent
for epoxy resins, in the preparation of isocyanates and polyisocyanates, in the
rubber industry, as a curative for neoprene, as a anti-frosting agent (anti-
oxidant) in footwear and raw material in preparation of poly(amide-imide)
resins (used in magnet wire enamels).

COMMENTS:
The technical grade of this compound contains 4% 2,4'-Methyleneaniline
[055].





HANDLING PROCEDURES





ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS:
This compound is harmful by inhalation, ingestion or skin contact [036,
058,269]. It may be absorbed through the skin [058,269,346,421]. When heated
to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide,
nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and aniline [043,058,269]. This compound
may cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract [058].

MINIMUM PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:
If Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing is not worn during
handling of this chemical, wear disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to
your gloves.

RECOMMENDED GLOVE MATERIALS:

approved half face respirator equipped with a combination filter cartridge,
i.e. organic vapor/acid gas/HEPA (specific for organic vapors, HCl, acid
gas, SO2 and a high efficiency particulate filter).

STORAGE PRECAUTIONS:
You should keep this material in a tightly closed container
under an inert atmosphere, and store it at refrigerated temperatures.
Keep it away from oxidizing materials and protect it from light.

SPILLS AND LEAKAGE:
Should a spill occur while you are handling this chemical, FIRST REMOVE
ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with
60-70% ethanol and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use
absorbent paper dampened with 60-70% ethanol to pick up any remaining material.
Seal the absorbent paper, and any of your clothes, which may be contaminated,
in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contamin-
ated surfaces with 60-70% ethanol followed by washing with a soap and water
solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or
other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES





SKIN CONTACT:
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating
all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly
with soap and water.
IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms
(such as redness or irritation) develop.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after
washing the affected areas.

INHALATION:
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air.
IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital even if no symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath,
or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop.
Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown
atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or
equal to that advised under Respirator Recommendation.

EYE CONTACT:
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush
victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while
simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center.
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without
specific instructions from a physician.
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if
no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing,
give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a
hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a
hospital if advised by a physician.
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth,
ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with
the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport
the victim to a hospital.

SYMPTOMS:
Exposure to this compound causes toxic hepatitis [099,275,346,395]. It
is the causative agent in "Epping Jaundice", a condition which includes severe
right-upper-quadrant pain, and high fever and chills, with subsequent jaundice
[031,421,430]. This condition may also result in portal inflammation, eosin-
ophil infiltration, cholangitis and cholestasis [395]. Other symptoms of
exposure to this compound include weakness, abdominal pain, nausea and/or
vomiting and anorexia [031,058]. Inhalation and/or ingestion of the dust leads
to liver damage [036]. Eye contact may cause burning, itching and tearing
[058]. It is painfully irritating to the eyes at 4 ppm [421]. Skin contact
can result in reddening and swelling, as well as skin sensitization causing
allergic dermatitis with rash, itching, hives and swelling of the arms and legs
[058]. Myocardial damage has also been reported [099,395,421]. It is suspect
in the development of choroidal melanoma [099]. It may also cause kidney
damage [301]. Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or impaired pulmonary
function may be more susceptible to the effects of this chemical. Other
symptoms include corneal burns, irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory
tract, blood and spleen damage and conjunctivitis [058].
